What Does Online Learning Really Look Like for Students?

Posted on 1 Sep at 8:13 pm

That depends! A mentor of mine often reminded me that every situation requires context. Online learning is no exception. Its success depends on key components: effective online teaching practices, strong teacher presence, engaging content, opportunities for social connection, and—something we’ve learned to emphasize more in recent years—intentional parental involvement.

At the World of Learning Institute (WOL), we work to ensure that these elements are not just theory, but daily practice. Teachers are present, parents are partners, and students know that support is always within reach.

The Role of Communication

Communication is at the heart of creating an online learning environment that feels connected and human. We’ve developed several systems to make sure students and families never feel adrift.

Weekly Monday Morning Message

Each Monday, students receive a structured update from their teachers. These messages outline weekly goals, live session schedules, and tips for pacing asynchronous work.

A sample Monday Morning Message that helps students map out their week and stay on pace with assignments.

Homeroom Check-Ins

Every student belongs to a homeroom community with a dedicated facilitator. This is their safe space for asking questions, building friendships, and navigating challenges.

Homeroom announcements provide students with a sense of belonging and a central place to find guidance. Activities and fun facts offer a conversation starter.

Learning Coach Connection for Parents

Parents are not left out. Mrs. Leah Driebelbis and Mrs. Christina Pavlov host a weekly Friday Zoom session for parents to ask questions, share strategies, and connect with others supporting learners at home.

Parents are invited to join Learning Coach Connection sessions for live support and community-building. Use this link to access the newsletter and Zoom link for the meetings.

Right-on-Time Support Desk

When unexpected hurdles arise, families can reach out for immediate help. Our Support Desk provides timely answers for students, parents, and districts.

The Support Desk is available for quick answers to technical, scheduling, or learning-related questions. Use this link to access the help desk (bookmark it, too).

Building Belonging Through Messages and Presence

The combination of teacher presence, consistent communication, and supportive family engagement helps students feel anchored in their learning. It’s not just about assignments and grades—it’s about students knowing someone is there to guide them each step of the way.

From the cheerful Monday message that kicks off the week, to the personal note of encouragement sent after a challenging quiz, communication builds belonging. Parents, too, are reassured by regular updates and clear ways to connect with teachers.

Check out this message to students from one of our Arabic Teachers:

ProTip: Setting up your space for learning from Christina and Leah’s Coaches Newsletter

Designate a Learning Space: Choose a quiet, comfortable spot where your learner can focus on their schoolwork without distractions.

  • Organize Supplies: Keep all necessary supplies (notebooks, pens, chargers) in one place to avoid last-minute searches.
  • Set a Routine: Establish a daily schedule that includes specific times for learning, breaks, and other activities.
  • Limit Distractions: Turn off TVs, limit phone use, and keep the learning area free from unnecessary noise.
  • Stay Connected: Regularly check in and stay updated on your learner’s progress and any upcoming assignments.
  • Be Supportive: Show interest in their work, offer help when needed, and encourage them to ask questions if they’re stuck.

And don’t forget – everyone on the team is here to help! If you are a district – how can you use these tips to help your learners’ stay on target right from the start?
